Summer is here, and it's hot hot hot! So get your bathing suits on and party out poolside with our latest mix set, the POOL PARTY MIX. Glasnost loves harmony melody and vocals, and pretty much everything about pop music. So when we make a mix set it's not gonna be your typical repetitive ravey club bangers, but that rare category of dance music that still retains the magic of pop songs...so without further ado:

Glasnost Pool Party Mix by glasnost

1) Amari - Your Kisses (Turzo Remix) :: This is the only remix we have by this guy "Turzo" but it is solid. As for Amari, vocals for us can make or break a track - and Amari's vocals are great. With a dash of that slightly unidentifiable foreign accent.

2) Cullen - Easily Impressed (Calling in Sick Remix) :: Pretty much everything said about the above track pertains to this one also. Except the foreign accent. Sick disco synths, great pop elements, and awesome vocals.

3) Alex Metric - Caller :: Now we start to get a little dirty with this track, this is one of the Alex Metric tracks that doesn't get enough hype, and it should! Damn he knows how to cut up vocals so well.

4) Chromeo - Night By Night (Bubblegum SciFi Remix) :: Another one-off, this is the only track we have from "Bubblegum Scifi". We like his name, we like his choice of remixes, and we like how he dirtied up this track but still kept all the right pop elements.

5) Gypsy and the Cat - Jona Vark (Shazam Remix) :: The disco-slide bass line in this track is so sick, we just can't get over it.

6) Shinichi Osawa - Star Guitar (Popular Computer Remix) :: What can we say, when this one drops you cannot NOT dance. And the singer has a sexy voice as an added bonus.

7) Hey Champ - Neverest (Raw Man Remix) :: We LOVE Hey Champ, after performing with them at the SXSW Lose Control party. Their vocals are so killer and their tracks are just pop excellence. This remix makes the track a little heavier but the best parts of the original are still showcased.

8) Gooseflesh - Still Wild :: Gooseflesh are a group from Turkey that makes killer original tracks and remixes, some of them are wild Justice-style electrobangers, and others have more of the disco touch to them, like the track we selected here. All of them are great though.

9) Yeasayer - O.N.E. (Glasnost Remix) :: We couldn't pass up a shameless self-congratulatory plug, now could we?

10) Cartwall - Let it Up (Databas Re-Remix) :: This is one of those tracks with the kinda vocals we love, wandering in that area between 80s and punk. And that electro bass line is great.

11) Just a Band - Girls Get Down :: Just a band has a wide range of different sounds on their albums, but this particular sound of their's is our favorite, that synth-heavy indie electro. They seem to have a couple of different vocalists also, but this guy is our personal fave.

12) Classixx - I'll Get You (Gigamesh Remix) :: I don't think there's anything we can say about this track that hasn't already been said. It has already received tons of love and rightly so, and we especially love this particular remix because of the heavy disco synths and awesome chord progression.

13) Naive New Beaters - Get Love (The Shoes Remix) :: We had to rock out and include at least a few guitars in this mix, so introducing Naive New Beaters. We love the way the singer has that 80s rap way of singing. That half-time section of this song is probably the closest we will EVER get to dubstep.

14) Visitor - Los Feeling (Flashworx Remix) :: Ok, with this track you're starting to feel a bit of the urgency and melancholy on the horizon, it's telling you "Oh no the mix is ending soon!" The singer's voice is very emotive in that 80s spirit of groups like Tesla Boy, we love it.

15) Kaskade feat. Dragonette - Fire in Your New Shoes :: As the pool party comes to a close, we all need one more guitar track to shake those last demons out of us. The singer for Dragonette has a great voice and we've been expecting these guys to blow up for a while now, by this time next year they'll probably be touring with Lady Gaga or something.

16) College - The Scarlett Empress :: College is a great outfit from the Valerie collective, making melancholy synth music that sounds like the soundtrack to some John Hughes movie that you can vaguely remember seeing when you were 13. This is the perfect track for the lonely maintenance man who has to clean up all the mess that you guys made during the pool party.

So there you have it...now go out and find that after-party! and before you do that, help us get to Lollapalooza by voting for our remix below. You can vote once a day, so keep them coming....cheers!

Oh, ya...and don't forget tomorrow:

Where to begin...

Hi All. Glasnost has been relatively dormant from the limelight this winter. Call it hibernation. But only socially. We've been busy. During these past few months we have taken pause only to fiercely come to conclusions upon who we are. What we are. We have scripted a video we eagerly plan to produce. Regretfully lost the best drummer in the known world only to fate's fortune to find a young-blood with excellent potential. Entered into new writing. Ultimately developed numerous plans for our future in entertaining you.

We are currently, and I mean as I type this right now, finishing up touches to the next few lovely Duhon creations. We are gonna spend the next 3 weeks honing and tightening. Working out the glitch. Getting this Devil of a drummer in just the right spot to make you move.

Catch us at March 15th Boondocks/Houston with the power of French Horn Rebellion and Grrrl Parts DJs as we prepare for Austin and SXSW.

More to come.

the first official glasnost mixtape: MOBIUS_01

For our last DJ set, we made 25 limited edition CDs of our first mixtape, MOBIUS_01. There are still a few left, so hang out with us at the Mink this Friday, May 8 (we'll be DJing), and we'll see about getting you one. And just in case you can't get your hands on it, you can download it below!

Mobius01Mix by glasnost

We'll be putting out more mixtapes in the future with the "MOBIUS" theme -- the idea is the last song of the mix set brings you back to the first song of the set. Here's a tracklist of MOBIUS_01:

1) the flaming lips - fight test (intro) :: it's the first track on what many consider their magnum opus, "yoshimi battles the pink robots." there's a certain poignancy and beauty to the album that gets me every time i listen to it. though we only used a very short clip here, it's nice to pay homage in some sort of way.

2) ted & francis - erlend (ted & francis remix) :: there's just something about the sound of chords played on a piano, isn't there? this is by far our favorite from their most recent EP -- and even though i can't fully make out the lyrics, there's just enough to make me believe there's something sad, beautiful, and true in those words.

3) kris menace / felix da housecat - artificial :: a spacey arpeggiator mixed with a funky driving bass line? we like this track, and unfortunately there's not much more to say about it!

4) sneaky sound system - 16 (flight facilities remix) :: yet another aussie group (along with ted & francis). i remember first falling in love with connie mitchell's voice -- it was riot in belgium's remix of "i love it" (how's that for a recursive experience!). they've always had this great funky dico-esque vibe to them that makes their songs prime for awesome remixes, like this one here. don't know too much about flight facilities, but if this indicative of what's to come, i suspect we'll all be hearing about them soon.

5) young mc - just bust a move (diplo remix) :: sometimes, all it takes is a little diplo to get the dancefloor really moving. i remember being obsessed with this song when i was a kid -- it was catchy then, and i think it's catchy now, especially with diplo adding his twist to it. well....don't just stand there!

6) bag raiders - nil by mouth (knightlife remix) :: here we go, more aussies...yes, both of them. this is a bit of an older track, but what a perfect combination! we love bag raiders, and we love knightlife. this track is beautifully hypnotic and just makes you want to dance carefree all night with beautiful people.

7) la roux - quicksand (joe and will ask? remix) :: i've somehow managed to pair londoners and aussies together. here it's londoners la roux, who just seemed to blow up overnight -- they're as hot as lead singer eleanor jackson's ginger hair (some of us in the band have a thing for redheads). joe and will ask? are also from london, and as i hear more from them, the more i'm impressed. good stuff.

8) cut copy - so haunted (knightlife reprise/edit) :: again, aussies grouped together. i remember hearing the original song and thinking it was good. then i remember coming across this little gem and thought it was amazing! when we all listened to it together, we just started bobbing our heads and looked at each other with great big smiles. we wanted to make a longer mixtape, but we figured this would make a nice happy ending and just stopped right here....sort of.

9) flaming lips - fight test (outro) :: and so we end where we began. the test is over, and we hope you've enjoyed it!

Come out and join us at the Mink this Friday where we'll be DJing alongside some of Houston's finest bands, artists, and DJs....see you there!

it's been too long, friends...

Looks like we have quite a bit of catching up to do here! Where do we start...the EP release? South by Southwest? Life in the studio? Our first official mixtape? The new addition to the band?

Let's start with the EP release: So we got our debut EP "Great Divide" mixed, mastered, and assembled just in time for South by Southwest! Our favorite remixes from Trash Yourself, Culture Prophet, and Kids at the Bar are also on the EP to ensure maximum head-bobbing danceability! We'd like to give big thanks to all of those who made submissions to the remix contest -- it was great to hear so many styles and interpretations of our songs, and it was very difficult to narrow down our favorites. So for those who participated, we strongly encourage you to throw your remixes out there to the world and share your talent! The new EP can currently be purchased from CDBaby, but will very soon be available on iTunes, Amazon, and others....so keep checking and stay tuned.

As for South by Southwest, it was simply amazing! We played a couple of shows out that were great fun, partied down with Culture Prophet, Nomathmatics, Kap10Kurt, French Horn Rebellion, and so many others...we're already excited about next year!

Seems we have quite a bit to share, so we'll have to continue on in our next post....until then.....

write it, cut it, paste it, save it, load it, check it, quick rewrite it.

So we finally finished recording and mixing, and now it's time for you to help us finish the EP! Our Local Blogness Houston's Most Hated is sponsoring a remix contest where the winner will get their track featured on our upcoming EP release "The Great Divide." They'll also get a prime slot at Houston's Most Hated SxSW party come March! We know there's a bunch of awesome talent out there, so here's your chance to let it shine!
